Fish Tale Charters Ocean City NJ Fishing Charters with the big storm we had blowing yesterday the trees and ocean around here were rocking. Winds were as high as 40 and 50mph. The rain was coming down sideways and later in the day we started to get snow. It was a miserable day. So I decided for something to do to go over to the Atlantic City Boat Show. It opened at 11am and there was a good turnout. A lot more people than I anticipated. Really I was thinking the show would be all mine with few people there. A lot of other folks like me were looking for something to do on a crummy day also. The show was not packed yet well attended. Good for the venders.

I talked to a bunch of people. Talked to the dealer of Cecile Marine which is where I am buying my new Parker Boat. He is saying now with no delays my new boat should be at Cecile next week sometime. It sounded to me like he was leaving the door open that there could be a delay. It happens. I have time. I will have a Yamaha engine on the new boat. With that in mind I spoke to the guys at Campbell’s Marine which is the Yamaha dealer that is right across the parking lot from me at Harbour Cove Marina which is where the boat is while in the water. I have known the guys at Campbell’s Marine for years, we had a fun conversation about the engines and just other fun stuff. My next stop was to see the guys at Martek Marine Electronics. The guys there are all ready to get started on the Garmin gear I’ll be putting on the new boat. We chatted for a bit and was off to the SiriusXM Marine booth. I got the info I needed there on what was required to get my account back up on line once the new electronics were in place. They also showed me some cool stuff you can tap into not only the music stations yet with the Satellite weather feature. Pretty cool. My last stop was the classic and antique boat booth. I checked it out because I have an interest in how boats used to be built. Back in the Day boats were not fiberglass and pop out of molds, they were built of wood and needed to be shaped. It was cool to see just how wood boats were steamed and shaped and built way back when.

I got to the Atlantic City Boat Show at 11:15am just after it opened and was heading home by 4pm. It was a good day. I had fun talking to folks. In some cases doing business and in others just talking and having fun. Good Day! Next year if you are looking for something to do even if you are not in the market for a boat, go to the AC Boat Show. It runs from Wednesday thru Sunday and is usually the first weekend of March. There is a lot of cool things to see. The boats are pretty cool too. You just might decide to buy one. LOL

Fish Tale Charters Ocean City NJ Fishing Charters Last week NOAA fisheries with the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries commission had their winter meetings. At these meetings everything about the fishing industry is discussed from soup to nuts. At the meetings last week proposals for the Flounder season were put on the table. There are three possible choices. New Jersey will need to adopt one. Here are the choices NJ will choose from.
1) Flounder season starting May 25th running thru September 22nd.
2) Flounder season starting May 22nd running thru September 20th.
3) Flounder season starting May 15th running thru September 16th.
These are the possible opening and closing dates for the 2018 Flounder season. For all of the possible choices above the Flounder size and bag limit as follows: 18 inch minimum size or larger with a bag limit per person per day at 3.

So they are keeping the same size Flounder as last year yet cutting back on the total number of Flounder you can keep per person per day by 2 fish. Last year you could keep 5 Flounder per person per day. So we are at 3 Flounder keepers for 2018.
The choice I like is number (1). My reasoning is that for a number of years the Flounder fishing has been slow in May. Everyone knows the Bay is the place to fish at this time of year. With the water not warming up until we have been getting to the end of May into June the Flounder fishing before Memorial Day Weekend has been slow. Going back a handful of years ago and further back in the day late April thru May was the choice time to get big Fluke in the Bay. Not so much anymore. On the other side of the season in September, the Flounder fishing has been good to very good out in the ocean. By then the Bay is done. The Flounder head into the ocean and the catching of Flounder is worth the trip to one of the wrecks or lumps.

I would rather give up the days in the earlier part of May fishing Flounder when it has been slow and get the days in September when the Flounder fishing in the ocean has been good. Choice number 1 starts us Flounder fishing Memorial Day Weekend which is fine yet we get more days in September which we have not had in the past due to regulations when Flounder fishing in the ocean has been good.

There is still fishing in the Bay to do in mid-April thru May. Not For Flounder but for Striped Bass & Bluefish. That can keep anglers busy until there is better conditions to catch Flounder by late May.

I am not thrilled, I am just OK with the cut in the bag limit from last year’s 5 Flounder to this year’s 3. The thing that bothers me more is they don’t see by keeping the size limit at 18” they are taking more and more of the big female breeders. We will run out some day. Without the females there are less and less Flounder.

My thinking is and has been for a long time to lower the size limit to either 17” or 17 ½” and then implement regulations that protect the large females more and take a few smaller males within reason. If you want anglers to keep 3 Flounder that’s OK I will live with it. Here is my proposal: I would use the dates in choice above number (1) with you being able to keep 2 Flounder at 17 ½” and a third Flounder at 18” or greater per person per day. With this proposal anglers have a better chance to bring home a dinner, the tackle shops sell tackle the hotels are happy the charter captains are happy and the most important issue in this is we are not taking too many large females and also not taking too many of the males. I know there are people out there that will cheat, that needs to be dealt with. Anyone that gets caught should get a lot more than a slap on the wrist. This goes for the Charter Captains too. OH WELL, WHAT THE HELL DO I KNOW?

Fish Tale Charters Ocean City NJ Fishing Charters as most of you are aware I am downsizing the boat for next season. I have sold the 36ft Calvin Beal and have ordered a 25ft Parker Sport Cabin. I had a 25ft Parker when I started in the charter business 17 years ago. The Parker is a very good fishing machine. Parker makes a very good boat. Knowing I wanted to downsize the boat and having first hand experience with the Parker It was an easy decision. The New Fish Tale will go into production later in January. If all goes as plan the 25ft Parker will be in the dealer’s yard by early March.

Once there at the dealer I’ll be able to get some pictures and post them so you can see the new fish catching machine you will be fishing on for the 2018 season. Once the new boat gets to the dealer the hull needs to be painted and there are some things I will have done to get her ready to take folks charter fishing. Also at that time the new electronics with the latest technology will be installed. I hope to splash her if all goes well by the end of April.

Fish Tale Charters Ocean City NJ Fishing Charters with the new boat, starting next year I will be taking groups from 1 to 4 people on my trips that I offer. I no longer will be taking groups of 5 or 6. So we are downsizing the boat and the numbers of people we will take on board on these trips.

GREAT NEWS! I WILL BE OFFERING A NEW TRIP FOR NEXT YEAR. I will offer a STRIPED BASS/BLUEFISH BACK COUNTRY BAY TRIP. This trip will be offered in the Spring in April thru May (possibly not this year pending when I get the new boat) It will also be offered in the fall starting in October and will be offered thru November, maybe into early December ( not sure about December). It will be offered as a 4 hour trip also as a 5 hour trip. More information to come.

Now with the new smaller boat I can get back in the skinny water in the Back Bay. There are Striped Bass back there and I have been out with a friend on his boat this year and other years and we have been catching. Two days ago my buddy and I caught a bunch of Striped Bass and kept two. Both Bass were over 28”. You will need some casting skills. The other way to do this trip if you want to buy some Spot for bait we can drift or troll these baits. It is a fun trip. In addition to the fish you could catch there are sights to see. We have seen Bald Eagles, Ospreys, Foxes, Ducks and Red Tailed Hawks. It is not only a fun way to fish, there is eye candy too.

As I get more information about the NEW BOAT I’ll pass it on to you all. I am PSYCHED about the new boat. STAY TUNNED!
